About The Writer

Hi I’m Jackie Miao. Since 1998, I’ve been planning, building and managing digital projects between the United States, United Kingdom and Asia Pacific markets. I run Mediatropica.
Some people may remember me as the sole Malaysian to make the Top 50 shortlist for the ‘Best Job in the World.’ Others may know me as the Founder and Organizer for Twestival Kota Kinabalu.
PRACTICAL-STRATEGY.COM is a blog about useful tools, tips, and insights on digital marketing, social media and digital strategy. I share practical tools for business owners and decision makers who might feel daunted by the sea of options made available by a vibrant and fast-changing internet industry.
It’s also a space where I analyze and de-mystify the trends of the web, identify the best online business practice habits, and share my insight from the inside world of developing products that help our clients see measurable results.
Here’s some background about what I’ve done and where I’ve been:-
The Dot.com Boom in the U.S.
My career began humbly in New York’s Silicon Alley and the Financial District in 1998, where my contribution to the industry is most noted on the British Airways account at Agency.com. As Prototype Developer and lead Site Builder on the Concorde project, I was part of the team that won the agency a nationally-coveted ADDY Award from the AAF. Prior to that, through an amazing personal story of toughing it out in the Big Apple, I was also featured in this New York Times article, The Streets Are Paved with PCs.
After a few years working and networking in New York and California, I moved back to Malaysia to start Centroworks.
Digital Consulting in the Far East
In 2002 I founded Centroworks Sdn. Bhd., a strategic web consultancy and development company which focused on the luxury hospitality and travel sector in the Asia Pacific region. As Executive Director, I oversaw new business development, strategy and planning, project management, and technical production for 5 years. I enjoyed running a business, but wanted to experience Europe, so I packed my bags in 2007 and headed to the United Kingdom for a Working-Holiday adventure.
Project Management in the U.K.
For six months during my working holiday, I contracted as Senior Interactive Producer & Project Manager at McCann Erickson London, part of McCann Worldgroup an IPG company. My services have been used on HP, Genworth Financial, Barclay’s Premier, Statoil, Nestle, Cooperative Retail, UPS, BMW Bikes, UNEP, Mastercard, L’oreal, Cemex, Sabic Corporation, Evening Standard and McCann Erickson internal projects.
The Return to Asia
I moved back to SE Asia in May 2009 and have since worked on projects to turnaround 4 websites for a yacht chartering client, website customization services for two spas, and produced a suite of marketing products for a local spa in Malaysian, Borneo. In December 2010, Mediatropica was born.
Charity Projects
In 2010, I brought in and organized Twestival Kota Kinabalu. Within 2.5 weeks we were able to gather the support of 47 volunteers and 29 sponsors to raise more than US$2,000 for Concern Worldwide. In 2011, we raised US $7,500 for the Sabah Society for the Blind. For more information, visit http://kotakinabalu.twestival.com
